City’s international defender Steve Borg received a four-match ban Yesterday.
Valletta’s title aspirations suffered a huge blow as key defender Steve Borg was slapped with a four-match ban by the Malta FA Disciplinary Commissioner yesterday.
Borg was sent off a couple of minutes after scoring his team’s winner in the 1-0 victory over Hibernians on Wednesday and received the standard one-match suspension.
But on his way to the dressing room, the 28-year-old was spotted spitting towards the Hibernians by the match officials and was subsequently handed an additional three-match suspension.
Borg’s absence will be a big setback for coach Paul Zammit as the Malta international was one of the key figures in the Valletta team who are challenging for the league title this season.
The former Aris Limassol player will now be forced to skip matches against Gżira United, today, Birkirkara (April 15), St Andrews (April 22) and Tarxien Rainbows (April 29). He will return to action against Ħamrun Spartans on the final day of the season.
Apart from Borg, Zammit is also without Nigerian midfielder Umeh Calistus for today’s match against Gżira.
The Nigerian midfielder picked up his fourth booking against Hibernians in midweek.
