Gilbert Agius joins Xewkija Tigers Published on: 31-10-2013

Gilbert Agius has decided to end his football career in Gozo. The 39 year old midfielder joined Xewkija Tigers on loan.
A product of the Valletta Nursery, Agius made his Citizens debut at the age of 16 on 2 September 1990, against Sliema Wanderers. On 7th November 1993 at the age of 19 he made his debut for the senior national side in a 2-1 victory for Malta over Gabon in an international tournament in Tunisia.
On the domestic front Gilbert won major honours several times, being a permanent member of Valletta's Championship winning side. Aside from a brief spell on loan with AC Pisa in Italy in 2001-02, Gilbert has been a mainstay for Valletta and is the only player ever to have been voted Maltese Footballer of the Year on three occasions.
Agius won this prestigious award in season 1996/97 when his club had again been on the rampage, winning the five major domestic honours in that season, in 2000/01 when Valletta swept away six titles on the field of play and also in season 2006/07. Gilbert Agius has made more league appearances for Valletta than any other player and stands second behind Stefan Sultana on the division's all-time list.
Gilbert Agius won the player of the month 13 times: in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998 (twice), 2000, 2001 (twice), 2003 (twice), 2007 (twice) and 2001. On October 11, 2011 Gilbert Agius received the commemorative cap and medal recently issued by UEFA for players who have reached a century of international appearances. On April 23rd 2010, Gilbert Agius made his 400th league appearance for the club nearly 20 years after his debut against the same opposition Sliema Wanderers.
On behalf of the club’s official website we would like to wish Gilbert luck with his new club.
