Gilbert Agius celebrates his 40th Birthday today. Published on: 21-02-2014



Gilbert made his Citizens debut at the age of 16 on 2nd September 1990, against Sliema Wanderers. On 7th November 1993 at the age of 19 he made his debut for the senior national side in a 2-1 victory for Malta over Gabon in an international tournament in Tunisia.

 
On the domestic front he has won major honours several times, being a permanent member of Valletta's Championship winning side. Apart from Valletta, during his career Agius also played for a season with Italian team Pisa in 2001.
 
Gilbert has been a mainstay for Valletta. The Maltese international was capped for 119 games with the national squad, scoring eight goals. He won the league eight times and won the MFA player of the year three times.
 
In October 2013, Gilbert joined Xewkija Tigers and signed a contract till the end of the season. This was a return to Gozitan football for the former captain of the national squad, having played with Victoria Hotspurs in the early 90s.
 
Gilbert Agius has been working as a youth coach and Assistant Manager with Valletta FC since season 2012-2013.
