Ex-Valletta goalkeeper Alfred Stivala passes away Published on: 19-08-2014



Maltese football especially Valletta Football Club is mourning the sad loss of former goalkeeper Alfred Stivala, who passed away yesterday at the age of 72 years.
 
Stivala was reserve goalkeeper of Tommy Taylor and he made his own debut when the Irish goalkeeper was sick. 
 
Stivala left a good impression during his first game on 13 October, 1962, finishing the game with a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Hibernians, the scorers were Silvio Rapinett and Mario Azzopardi. 
 
The formation of the team during this match was: Alfred Stivala, Walter Bone, Edwin Schembri, Charlie Williams, Joe Cilia, John Darmanin, Charlie Chircop, Josie Urpani, Mario Azzopardi, Frankie Zammit, Paul Gauci (Silvio Rapinett). 
 
Stivala played in three seasons for Valletta F.C. making 15 appearances in - 1962/63 (1); 1963/64 (4); 1964/65 (10). 
 
Stivala also played in the second leg of the first round of the Champions Cup against Dukla Prague (Czechoslovakia), on 19 September, 1963. 
 
The Lillywhites formation consisted of: Alfred Stivala, John Attard, Vincent Gauci, Charlie Williams, Joe Cilia, Frankie Zammit, Vincent Vassallo, Tony Vassallo, Tony Calleja, Josie Urpani, Alfred Borg. The team was under the guidance of coach Carm Borg. 
 
The funeral will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, at 9.00 am, in St Julians Parish Church.
