Europa League Second Round 2nd Leg - Valletta vs St. Patrick's Published on: 22-07-2009
Europa League Second Round Secound Leg
Valletta face Irish side St Patrick’s Athletic tomorrow at The Centenary Stadium at 17:30hrs in the second qualifying round of the Europa Cup . The Citizens held the Saints in a 1-1 result last Thursday.
The Saints were the stronger side in the first half and broke the deadlock on the 37 th minute. A Stephen Maher cross from the right was deflected and Declan O’Brien placed the ball in the net from close range. Newly signed O’Brien had a perfect debut after joining the Saints from Dundalk on Tuesday.
In the second half the Citizens levelled matters on the 65 th Minute. Captain Gilbert Agius received a return pass from Geert den Ouden and fired a shot from close range, giving keeper Gary Rogers no chance. Valletta were unlucky minutes later following a rising effort by Jamie Pace that was neutralised by Gary Rogers. In the dying minutes of the match striker Geert den Ouden received a pass from Gilbert Agius but his effort ended high over the bar.
Valletta should have to do without striker Njongo Priso who is suspened for tomorrow’s match. Priso received a yellow card in the second leg of the first qualifying round match against Keflavik and also in the first half of the first leg of the second qualifying round match.
A goalless result is enough for the Citizens to make it through to the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
