Two goals by Brazilian Paulo Massaro and a goal by captain Gilbert Agius enabled Valletta to reduce the gap with leaders Hibernians yesterday.
Injuries and suspensions forced the City’s coach to make some changes; Luke Dimech was replaced by Josef Mifsud while midfielder Roderick Briffa was replaced by Jamie Pace. Goalkeeper Nicky Vella guarded the post instead of the injured Andrew Hogg. Sliema W. had to do without Jeffrey Chetcuti suspended while Mark Scerri, Branco Nisevic and Samsiro Furfaro were all unavailable through injuries.
In the early minutes of the match Paulo Massaro tried his luck with a shot from outside by was easily blocked by Henry Bonello. 14 minutes later following a fine run by Dyson Falzon, the ball reached Ian Zammit but his effort was easily saved by Bonello.
On the 30 th minute following a poor clearance by Henry Bonello, Paulo Massaro received the ball but his effort ended wide. Two minutes later a tackle by Lucian Dronca on the City’s captain while the latter was about to shoot from close range. Sliema W. nearly opened the score two minutes later, Matthew Bartolo forged down the left flank went past a defender before sending a cross to Miguel Ciantar which ended inches wide.
Valletta opened the score on the 38th minute, Dyson Falzon’s free kick was cleared by Henry Bonello from the loose ball Paulo Massaro placed the ball in the net from close range. In the second half Gilbert Agius progressed on the right flank, went past a Sliema defender and sent a cross, Edmund Agius tried his luck with a powerful shot which was blocked by Paulo Massaro. Valletta increased the score on the 60th minute following a corner kick by Dyson Falzon which was headed by Paulo Massaro. On the 63rd minute the City’s keeper denied the Blues after tipping Daniel Severino’s effort over the bar. A minute later Sliema replied by a free kick by Roderick Bajada which hit the woodwork.
On the 65th minute Gilbert Agius hit the upright following a free kick from the left. Ian Zammit failed to increase the score minutes later following a counter but his poor effort went wide. On the 81st minute Valletta secured the three points, Gilbert Agius received a fine pass from Paulo Massaro before firing a shot passt Henry Bonello. 28.04.09 |
