Valletta managed to stop Hibernians’ positive run beating them 2-1 yesterday. This was a deserved win for the Citizens who offered a great performance and fighting spirit through the match.
 
Both teams made some changes from their usual line ups, Valletta’s mentor Paul Zammit left Sebastian Monesterolo and Njongo Priso on the bench and chose Dyson Falzon and Paulo Massaro in the forward line. Midfielder Jamie Pace was missing through suspension and was replaced by Edmond Agius in midfield. Hibernians had Adrian Pulis also missing through injury.
 
The Citizens started the match on the offensive side, a shot by Gilbert Agius ended high on the eight minute. Hibernians’ was immediate following a shot by Zeferino which was saved by Andrew Hogg into a corner. On the 11th minute Andrew Hogg performed an excellent save on Andrew Cohen’s shot from close range.
 
Valletta broke the deadlock on the 14th minute, Steve Bezzina’s cross hit Clayton Failla’s arm inside the box the ball fall into the path of Paulo Massaro who fired the ball inside the net. Valletta nearly doubled the score on the 26th minute, Roderick Briffa progressed inside the Paolities area before sending a low cross which sailed across the face of goal but was not met by the City’s strikers.
 
Hibernians leveled matters on the 39th minute, Ben Camilleri’s long throw was headed by Jonathan Caruana towards the unmarked Zefferino who fired the ball home. Following this action goal keeper Andrew suffered an injury and had to be replaced by Nicky Vella.
 
On the 43rd minute Valletta added the score, the Hibernians defense failed to clear shots by Dyson Falzon, Edmond Agius and Roderick Briffa the ball fell to the unmarked Dyson Falzon who beat goal keeper Mario Muscat with a powerful shot.
 
Early in the second half Gilbert Agius crossed the ball from the right reached man of match Dyson Falzon whose first timer was cleared into a corner. Coach Paul Zammit made his first substation on the 68 th minute Njongo Priso came on instead of Ian Zammit.
 
On the 73rd minute Hibernians nearly leveled matters, a free kick by Christian Callejas hit the crossbar. Valletta nearly scored the third goal on the 80 th minute when Sebastian Monesterolo managed to beat the onrushing Mario Muscat but his shot was cleared by Jonathan Pearson. In the dying minutes of the match Roderick Briffa was dismissed by the referee following a late tackle on Jonathan Caruana.
