Southsiders hold Citizens

Valletta were held in their last outing against Hamrun whereas M’Xlokk started their Championship Pool commitments with an emphatic win against Floriana with Alfred Effiong scoring all four goals.

The Lillywhites welcomed back Denni Dos Santos but Jamie Pace was once again missing through injury. For M’Xlokk Licari returned and started on the bench with Clive Brincat missing once again due to his long term injury.

In the first round match Valletta prevailed by a 2-0 score but it was scoreless in the second.

The Seasiders did the early running and after just two minutes an Effiong shot was saved by Hogg.

On 12 minutes Valletta responded through a Temile cross which Scerri headed just over the bar. And a minute later on the other end Pullicino found Sciberras only for the latter to blast wide.

And before the end of the half Denni Dos Santos had his shot blocked and from the resultant rebound Fenech’s volley just missed the target.

On resumption Valletta went near when off a Fenech cross Pullicino nearly committed an own goal when he headed goal bound but the ball went over for a corner.

For long stretches play was restricted to the midfield sector and it was only on 71 minutes that Valletta threatened when following a surging run by Scerri, his cross was volleyed wide by Gilbert Agius.

Fifteen minutes from the end another chance for Valletta but this time Agius was the creator with Gauci making a point blank save on Scerri.

M’Xlokk scored what looked to be the winner seven minutes from time when Sciberras made his way past the Valletta rearguard and crossed towards LICARI who drove home.

But Valletta didn’t throw in the towel and on 88 minutes they drew level when Gilbert Agius found Scerri whose shot hit the upright and in came FENECH who headed home from close range and sent the Valletta faithful into raptures.

In stoppage time M’Xlokk could have stole it but an Alcorse header sailed just over the bar. And later on Raimy was sent off for a second bookable offence.
