The Citizens lost three important points yesterday against Birkirkara 1-3. The Citizens now lay four points adrift of leaders Hibernians.
Valletta had striker Cleaven Frendo and midfielder Stefan Giglio, both players are recovering from injuries. Early in the match a cross from the stripes striker Krasen Valkov hit the cross bar.
Birkirkara took the lead on the 29th minute, a cross by Shaun Bajada was cleared by the Valletta defenders, and the ball reached Michael Galea who slotted the ball past Andrew Hogg.
Valletta levelled matters on the 39th minute following a corner kick by Gilbert Agius, Jamie Pace headed the ball home. Early in the second half Valletta nearly took the lead following a cross by Justin Grioli which hit the bar. Minutes later following a fine run by Dyson Falzon on the left who passed the ball to Ian Zammit but the latter’s’ low shot was easily saved by Omar Borg.
On the 69th minute, Shaun Bajada passed the ball to Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza who enter inside the Citizens area and sent a cross which was saved by defender Steve Bezzina.
Paul Zammit substituted Sebastian Monesterolo for Dyson Falzon and Paolo Massaro for Roderick Briffa. On the 79th minute Paulo Massaro received the ball inside the Stripes area passed to ball to Sebastian Monesterolo, the latter’s’ powerful shot from close range was saved by Omar Borg.
On the 85th minute Birkirkara took the lead following a corner kick to Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza who headed the ball home. The Stripes made it 3-1 on the 90th minute, Paul Fenech served the ball to the unmarked Kiril Mihaylov Dimitrov who placed the ball in the back of the net.
