Valletta started the Championship Pool yesterday with a 5-0 result against Sliema Wanderers.
The Citizens remain with just one point behind leaders Hibernians. Valletta had Stefan Giglio missing through injury while coach Paul Zammit introduced Cleavon Frendo instead of Dyson Falzon.
Sliema Wanderers had Goal-keeper Henry Bonello missing through suspension while defender Branko Nisevic was missing through injury.
Valletta took the lead early in the match, on the 7th minute Ian Zammit’s powerful shot hit the post and from the rebound Njongo Priso placed the ball in the back of the net. On the 13th minute the Citizens doubled the score, a cross shot from the right by defender Justin Grioli ended in the back after beating goal-keeper Simon Agius.
On the 17th minute Valletta made it 3-0 when off a corner by Gilbert Agius, man of match Njongo Priso served Jamie Pace who beat Simon Agius from close range. Sliema coach Stephen Azzopardi made some changed on the 30 th minute, Victor Coto was replaced by John Mintoff.
Valletta threatened the Blues again on the 32 nd minute when off a free-kick by Gilbert Agius the ball ended inches wide. Six minutes from half time Ian Zammit served the ball to Gilbert Agius but the latter’s header ended wide. Sliema Wanderers replied with a free-kick by Roderick Bajada his effort ended high over the bar.
In the second half Andrew Hogg saved a header from the Blue’s defender Ian Azzopardi and on the 60 th minute following some loose marking in the City’s area, Ivan Woods saw his effort ending wide from inside the area.
On the 71st minute Valletta added another goal, Cleavon Frendo progressed inside the Blue’s area his cross was handled by Ian Ciantar and the referee awarded a penalty, captain Gilbert Agius made no mistake from the spot. Valletta scored the firth goal on the 75th minute; Njongo Priso played a one-two with Gilbert Agius, who back heeled his return before beating Sliema goal-keeper Simon Agius.
