Valletta ended the first phase of the BOV Premier League with a 3-1 result against Hamrun Spartans and remain the only unbeaten team in the Premier League.

Njongo Priso was introduced in the second half by Coach Paul Zammit. Sebastian Monesterolo was missing for yesterday’s match; the Argentine striker is still struggling with a knee injury. Midfielder Jamie Pace replaced the suspended Edmond Agius in the midfield.

On the 8 th minute striker Sylvano Comvalius send a cross from the right, the city defenders failed to clear the ball, Steve Meilak unmarked missed the target from close range for the Spartans. On the 12 th minute the Citizens nearly opened the score, Cleavon Frendo received a perfect pass from Gilbert Agius but his shot was bravely saved by the Spartans goal-keeper.

Minutes later Sylvano Comvalius received a yellow card by the referee after being judged to have divided inside the Citizens’ area following a tackle by Luke Dimech. On the 36 th minute Hamrun took the lead, a cross from the left by Florin Anton inside the Citizens’ area reached Geatan Spiteri who headed the ball into the net.

Valletta’s reaction was immediate and after five minutes the Citizens leveled matters, Dyson Falzon released Ian Zammit and the latter managed to chip the ball over the onrushing goal-keeper. Valletta doubled the score two minutes later, another cross by Dyson Falzon to the Valletta born striker Ian Zammit who headed the ball inside the net.

Early in the second half referee Alan Mario Sant gave marching orders to the Spartans defender Jonathan Bondin after the latter was judged to have fouled on Cleavon Frendo. On the 60 th minute the Spartans fans shouted for a penalty after Gaetan Spiteri looked to have been fouled inside the area by Justin Grioli.

Ten minute from the end Valletta secured the three points, Ian Zammit headed the ball towards Njongo Priso and the latter beat the Spartans goal-keeper with a low shot. The Citizens could have easily increased the score in the dying minutes of the match following a shot from captain Gilbert Agius which ended wide.
