Valletta returned to winning ways after beating arch rivals Floriana 1-0. A large crowd of Supporters were present yesterday at the National Stadium. The Citizens performance was much better than Monday’s display against Qormi FC. The Lilly Whites are back on top of the BOV Premier League table two points ahead of Hibernians who have a game in hand.
Coach Paul Zammit made some changes from last Monday’s formation against Qormi FC, Gilbert Agius, Luke Dimech, Ian Zammit and Dyson Falzon were chosen with the first team. Njongo Priso and Sebastian Monesterolo were missing; Priso was suspended for this match while Sebastian Monesterolo was sidelined through injury.
Floriana also had some players missing from their formation; Pablo Doffo, Christian Caruana and Joseph Borg were suspended while Clyde Camoin is still recovering from an injury. Early in the match a powerful shot from a distance by Edmund Agius was easily saved by the Green’s German Goal-keeper. On the 21st minute Floriana replied with a shot by Ryan Darmanin that went wide.
On the 42nd Dyson Falzon nearly gave Valletta the lead, a perfect pass from Roderick Briffa through Dyson Falzon who shot wide. Early in the second half Cleaven Frendo served Ian Zammit from the right but the latter’s shot went wide.
Valletta took the lead on the 52nd minute when off a cross from the right by captain Gilbert Agius, Dyson Falzon headed the ball past the Green’s goal-keeper. A Few minutes later Andrew Hogg performed an excellent save following a deflected ball from City’s defender Luke Dimech.
Jamie Pace saw his effort ending wide on the 58th minute after the Citizens’ coach Paul Zammit substituted Jamie Pace for Edmond Agius. In the dying minutes of the match Kenneth Scicluna served man of match Dyson Falzon inside the box but failed to make contact with the ball following a tackle from a Floriana defender. 21.02.09
