Valletta moved two points behind leaders Hibernians yesterday after winning the three points against wooden-spoonists Tarxien Rainbows.
Valletta suffered an early shock in the early minutes of the match when striker Mark Tanti gave Tarxien R the lead.
Valletta had Edmond Agius and Doding Priso missing through suspension. Newly signed Paulo Massaro made his debut yesterday and joined Sebastian Monesterolo forming the Citizens attacking duo. Midfielder Roderick Briffa, who joined the Lilly Whites last week was named in but was not included in the match.
The Rainbows took the lead on the 10 th minute, when off a pass from the right by Luke Vella Critien, Mark Tanti placed the ball into the corner of the net.
The City’s equalizer came on the 19 th minute, when off a free-kick by Dyson Falzon the ball ended in the back of the net surprising goalkeeper Anthony Curmi.
On the 30 th minute Cleavon Frendo progressed inside the area crossed towards Sebastian Monesterolo, but the latter’s low shot was neutralized by goalkeeper Anthony Curmi.
Valletta took the lead at the end of the first half; man of match Cleavon Frendo served Ian Zammit, who beat Curmi with a powerful shot from outside the area.
Early in the second half Gilbert Agius made his way inside the Tarxien area after passing to Paulo Massaro who rounded goal keeper Curmi but hit wide from the right. In the 56 th minute Gilbert Agius was fouled inside the area but referee Adrian Azzopardi cautioned the City’s captain for simulation.
On the 55 th minute Ian Zammit was substituted with defender Steve Bezzina after being involved in collision with Andrew Decesare. Mariano Bueno produced a fast break for the Rainbows but his effort was cleared into a corner.
On the 65 th minute, the Citizens secured the three points, Cleavon Frendo was fouled outside the area and from the following free-kick Gilbert Agius placed the ball into the low left corner of the net.
