Day 03: Valletta 1 Qormi 0 Published on: 26-09-2010

Scerri's late strike boosts Valletta
Valletta needed a late goal from Terrence Scerri to beat a plucky Qormi team in today’s second match.
Qormi looked on course to gain a creditable draw but Scerri struck seven minutes from time to steer Valletta back to winning ways following their 2-2 draw with Hibs in their previous match.
It took the two times a while to get going. On 16 minutes, a shot by Ho Jung Kang, Qormi’s South Korean forward, took a deflection but Andrew Hogg saved with relative ease.
Valletta intensified their pressure as the first half moved on. Four minutes past the half-hour, Denni tricked his way into box before hitting a cross-cum-shot that sailed behind Matthew Farrugia and across the face of goal.
The second half had just started when Qormi’s Abubakar Bello-Osagie sized up a dipping shot that forced Hogg into a fine save as the City goalkeeper pushed the ball away for a corner.
It was then the turn of Farrugia, the Qormi goalkeeper, to show his alertness as he dashed off his line to dispossess Steve Borg with a sliding tackle.
The Citizens worked up a head of steam. Temile fired wide after receiving from Borg and, on another occasion, the Nigerian winger was denied by Farrugia.
Qormi continued to battle hard while relying on counter-attacks to hurt their opponents. On 79 minutes, Bello-Osagie found space to have a pot at goal but his central shot was blocked by Hogg.
The Citizens forged ahead thanks to Scerri who poked the ball home from close range after Qormi had partially blocked Kevin Sammut’s shot.
Qormi striker Bello-Osagie was voted BOV player of the match.
