City clinch another Derby

In the play-off for third place, Valletta maintained their dominance over derby rivals Floriana this season with a narrow 1-0 win, the goal that mattered coming on 59 minutes through Denni dos Santos.

The closest Floriana came to scoring an equaliser was on 84 minutes when a header by Christian Caruana from a corner flew just over the City goal.
On 86 minutes a Terrence Scerri ‘goal’ was disallowed for offside and in the first minute of stoppage time Kevin Sammut had a good chance to double City’s lead but hit badly from a good position.

Hibernians won the second edition of the Gozo Cup yesterday with a 2-0 victory over Ħamrun Spartans in the final.
Hibernians goalkeeper Daniel Balzan was undoubtedly the protagonist in the Paolites’ victory with a series of fine saves to deny the Spartans from getting back into the match.

Brian Fairbairn opened the scoring for Hibs on 16 minutes and the Spartans should have equalised soon after but shots from Marcelo Pereira and Gaetan Spiteri were neutralized by Daniel Balzan.

Triston Caruana should have done better in front of the Ħamrun goalkeeper as the second half got underway. Ħamrun, on their part, squandered a good chance on 52 minutes when Pereira incredibly concluded over the bar from close distance.

Balzan played a sound match and distinguished himself with a difficult save from a Pereira shot on 75 minutes. Ħamrun were punished for a series of missed chances when Hibernians practically made sure of victory with the second goal. Caruana hit home from close distance following a fine cross from the right flank by Fairbairn.
