Valletta face Keflavik of Iceland today in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round at the Centenary Stadium at 5.30pm.
Geert den Ouden and Steve Borg are both available for today’s game and therefore coach Ton Caanen has all squad at his disposal.
Last season Keflavik finished in the second place of their domestic league, one point behind champions FH Hafnarfjordur. Keflavik have already played ten matches in their domestic league and are currently fourth with 18 points.
Keflavik FC come from the town of Reykjanesbaer in Iceland. They won the championship four times and the Icelandic Cup another four times. They took part in all the major European competitions.
Keflavik made their debut in Europe in 1965 after winning the title the previous year. They played against Ferencvaros in the European Cup. The Hungarians won 9-1 and 4-1 for a 13-2 aggregate win. In season 1979/80 Keflavik eliminated Swedish side Kalmar FF in the first round of the UEFA Cup. They lost 2-1 in Sweden but qualified on the away goals after winning 1-0 at home. In season 2005/06 they reached the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup after eliminating Etzella of Luxembourg.
The away match will be played on Thursday 9 th; the winner of the match between Valletta and Keflavik will meet St. Patrick’s Athletic from Ireland.
