Valletta scored three goals yesterday in the first leg of the Europa League against Keflavik FC. With this lead enhances the Citizens’ chances of making it into the second qualifying round of the competition.
After two minutes a fine shot by newly signed Geert Den Ouden was easily saved by goalkeeper Lasse Jorgensen. Valletta deservedly took the lead on the 25 th minute; Geert den Ouden received a perfect pass from Njongo Priso after firing a shot that was saved by Jorgensen. Dyson Falzon took the rebound and placed the ball in the net.
On 29 minutes a curling shot by Dyson Falzon was easily saved by Keflavik’s goalkeeper. Jordi Cruyff nearly doubled the score for the Citizens on the 32 nd minute, but his shot from an angled position hit the post.
Early in the second half Valletta doubled the score, a cross from the left by Roderick Briffa found Njongo Priso who slotted the ball past Lasse Jorgensen. The Citizens created more chances and on 53 minutes Geert Den Ouden tried his luck with a low shot that was turned into a corner by Jorgensen.
Valletta scored the third goal on the 70 th minute, Geert Den Ouden received an excellent pass from Jordi Cruyff concluded a good run and slotted the ball onto the corner of the net. Two minutes later Dyson Falzon nearly added the score for the Lilly Whites, but his shot ended wide. On the 80 th minute Keflavik replied with a free kick on the right after Hord Sveinsson’s header was saved by Andrew Hogg. On the 86 th minute Ian Zammit failed to score for the Citizens after receiving a fine pass from Gilbert Agius.
The away leg will be played next Thursday 9 th July.
