Executive Board Elections and appointment of ECA Chairman
Representatives from 162 member Clubs attended the European Club Association 19th General Assembly in Geneva Switzerland. President Victor Sciriha and Secretary General Joe Attard were our representatives for this Meeting which was held on Monday 4/5th September in Geneva With the start of the new 2017/19 Membership Cycle, the ECA members present at the General Assembly elected a new Executive board. Eleven board members were elected and will be joined by the four ECA representatives on UEFA’s Professional Football Strategy Council (PFSC). The recently appointed ECA PFSA members are:Josef Maria Bartomeu (Barcelona), Ed Woodward (Man Utd), Nasser Al-Khelafi (Paris St Germain), and Peter Lawwell (Celtic FC). Following the elections, the new Executive Board met for the first time to appoint the Chairman and Vice Chairman. Andre Agnelli, President of Juventus, was unanimously appointed ECA Chairman for the coming two year cycle.
Bestowal of ECA Honorary Chairmanship
In taking over the helm of the European Club Association, Andre Angnelli becomes the second ECA Chairman, following Karl -Heinz Rummenigge, who served in this position since the body was founded in 2008. In recognition of his significant contribution and commitment to the development of European club football over the past 9 years, Karl Heinz Rummenigge was awarded the first ever ECA Honorary Chairmanship.
Members discuss the future of European club football
ECA Member Clubs met in break out sessions to discuss upcoming challenges and priorities in European Club football. Much of the focus of the discussion centered around topics such as the transfer system (incl. the length of the transfer window) the future of Financial Fair Play and the European Club Competitions concept 2021-24. It was agreed, that further discussions will be held on these matters to develop an ECA position following which it will be shared and discussed with the relevant stakeholders of the professional game.
Club President Mr Victor Sciriha on behalf of Valletta FC thanked Karl Heinz Rummenigge for his outstanding service during his Chairmanship at ECA, whilst wished all the best of Luck to Andre Agnelli as Chairman of ECA for the coming two years.
