100 Premier Division appearances for Matteo Piciollo Published on: 19-12-2017
Valletta striker Matteo Piciollo made his 100th appearance in the Malta Premier Division last Saturday in their match versus Mosta (1-0) at the Hibernians Ground. A wonderful personal milestone for the technically gifted forward, who is having an excellent season so far, with some impressive displays weekly for the Citizens.
The 25-year-old Italian, born in Rome, is in his 4th season in the Premiership. Floriana signed him from Ostiamare (Serie D) in 2014 and after two seasons with The Greens, Piciollo was loaned one season to Balzan FC. This summer Floriana released him and he joined Valletta.
Piciollo made his senior debut during season 2010/11 for Atletico Roma in the Serie C1, aged 19. The following season he played for Salerno in the Serie D where he made another 11 senior appearances (1 goal). In 2012 he signed for another Serie D club, Civitevecchia, where he had an excellent season with 8 goals in 32 matches. Before coming over to Malta, he had another great season with Ostiamare, scoring 12 goals in 29 Serie D appearances.
So far, Piciollo scored 35 goals in Malta, all in the Premier Division. In Italy he scored 21 Serie D goals. meaning he is on 56 official senior career goals.
He is only the third Italian in Malta who reached 100 games in the Premier Division. The other two are Sliema Wanderers defender Stefano Bianciardi (138 apps) and Paltemio Barbetti (130), who returned to Italy in the meantime and is now playing for Polisportiva Monti Cimini in the Eccellenza laziale, after a career in Malta with Sliema Wanderers, Zebbug Rangers and Pembroke Athleta.
